ANYONE CAN MAKE A MISTAKE
Another short one this week…
"Hey, anyone can make a mistake!"
Lots of people know about Dick Rowe, even if they can't place the name. Dick Rowe was an A&R man for Decca Records, and he was the guy who rejected the Beatles.
In 1962 Brian Epstein took his clients to London for an audition, to try and get them a record contract. The Beatles went through their repertoire, and at the end Rowe shook his head and took the manager aside.
"Guitar groups are on the way out, Mr. Epstein," he said. "You have a good business in Liverpool. Go back there. The Beatles have no future in show business." And with that, Dick Rowe rejected the future Fab Four, greatest and most successful rock band ever.
Needless to say Epstein didn't give up. He next went to EMI Records, who also gave the Beatles thumbs down. However, the company's comedy-record producer heard their demo, and decided to…ah…meet the Beatles. Impressed, he signed them to EMI subsidiary Parlophone, and agreed to be their producer. His name? George Martin, also known as "the fifth Beatle" and, since 1996, Sir George Martin.
And Dick Rowe? He didn't give up, either. Although guilty of the greatest boo-boo in music industry history, he stayed in the business and kept plugging along. And sure enough, The Man Who Rejected The Beatles went on to sign-----the Rolling Stones.
Anybody can make a mistake. What counts is that you learn from it. And don't give up.
